Iranian opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi said people have the right to protest against lies and fraud, according to a statement released on Sunday on the website of his newspaper Kalameh.

"I as one of the mourners (of the Saturday killings) invite my dear people to self-restraint. The nation belongs to you," Mousavi said.

"The revolution is your legacy. To protest against lies and fraud is your right. Be hopeful that you will get your right and do not allow others who want to provoke your anger… to prevail," the presidential candidate said.

He made his statement in the wake of state television reports that at least 10 people were killed on Saturday amid street protests against the declared results of the June 12 presidential election.

Mousavi, shown by official results to have trailed 11 million votes behind incumbent president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, added: "In your protests keep on refraining from violence."

He also called on police and the military "not to act in such a way" as to cause "irreparable" harm to relations with ordinary people.

"Withholding information over the names and addresses of the martyrs and wounded from their families and keeping them wondering will not help restore calmness and will only keep the emotions hurt," he said.
