For the second time in as many days, President Obama distanced himself Tuesday from the liberal-backed proposal for a government-run health insurance option that is likely to be dropped from a final health care reform bill.
"I didn’t campaign on the public option," Obama told the Washington Post, saying of the Senate’s health legislation: "Every single criteria for reform I put forward is in this bill."
On Monday, Obama took a similar line in an interview with American Urban Radio Networks, telling correspondent April Ryan that the public option "is an area that has just become symbolic of a lot of ideological fights," but: "As a practical matter, this is not the most important aspect of this bill."
