The same day that GOP candidate Rick Snyder ran his "Its Time For A Nerd (One Tough Nerd) campaign message for Governor and Michigan political pundit Tim Skubick opined on the ad that:

But let’s just step back for a second and let’s say you’re a blue-collar guy or woman that works on the line. And you see a guy who calls himself a nerd wants to be governor. And top of it he’s from a town called Ann Arbor," said Skubick.  (Source:WWJ950)

The Detroit Free Press runs an excellent expose that asks ‘How Do We Prepare Our Kids For Jobs, The Future?" The Freep writes:

The facts are these: More than 80% of Michigan students are graduating from high school without the skills to tackle college-level work. Millions of dollars are being spent on remedial education in the state’s higher-education institutions. Fewer than half of Michigan kids actually go to college.

Ten years ago, Michigan students scored above the U.S. average on a key national barometer of student achievement. Today, test scores have slipped below those of students in many other states, fueled in part by the disastrous performance of Detroit Public Schools and other underperforming districts.

"We’re an average state in a below-average country," state schools Superintendent Mike Flanagan said. "That’s not OK in this global economy."

The reality is that Michigan faces a dismal future unless it can lure more businesses with the promise of a well-educated workforce.

The Centrist and millions of other Michiganders would ask Tim Skubic on who would take offense on a self-professed Nerd leading Michigan to the promise of a well-educated workforce? Doesnt it take one to know one (NERD)?

Southfield (WWJ)  — A local Republican running for Governor has a local ad running during the Superbowl Sunday night. WWJ Lansing Bureau Chief Tim Skubick says Rick Snyder is an entrepreneur, and a self-described non-politician.

"His TV spot is a ‘doozy.’ It will create a buzz, but the question is will it create the kind of buzz that Snyder wants," said Skubick in a live interview on WWJ.

In the ad, Snyder infers that people should elect him because "it’s time for a nerd."

"You could argue with this spot running in the Superbowl where there are yucks and stuff like that, it probably is totally appropriate. In fact, I’m still laughing. It’s a great line. No nerd has ever run for governor. But let’s just step back for a second and let’s say you’re a blue-collar guy or woman that works on the line. And you see a guy who calls himself a nerd wants to be governor. And top of it he’s from a town called Ann Arbor," said Skubick.

And Skubick says the ad could stir up some controversy.

"Obviously, they must have focused group this thing beforehand because you don’t put TV spots on the air or on the radio without at least finding out how the public is going to respond. But whether they picked up on any negative on the nerd thing will be the thing we’ll be trying to evaluate over the next couple of days."

Skubick says he’s not sure whether Snyder paid the usual $2 million to have the ad run during the Superbowl because it’s not a national ad, it was bought locally.

Snyder faces four others in the GOP contest.
